The short version

The free plan that is not a trap

hide.me is a Malaysian provider that has quietly built one of the most respected free tiers in the category, and a competent paid product behind it. Malaysia sits outside the Fourteen Eyes agreements and has no mandatory data retention regime, which is a genuine structural advantage.

Reviewers describe the speeds as better than expected — one noted premium servers were "exemplary" and far faster than anticipated — and the service now permits P2P on all servers including the free ones, making it one of the more torrent-friendly options available.

What users and reviewers praise

What people say is good

A free tier worth using

Reviewers consistently rate this among the best free VPN plans available. No ads, no logging, and unlike most free VPNs the funding model is obvious — it is a sample of a paid product that already pays the bills.

Malaysian jurisdiction

Outside the Fourteen Eyes agreements with no mandatory data retention. A structural privacy advantage that most European and US providers cannot match.

Faster than expected

A recurring note in reviews: WireGuard performance on local servers is excellent, and reviewers found premium servers just as quick as the free ones. Bare-metal server infrastructure rather than rented virtual machines.

P2P allowed everywhere

Torrenting is permitted on all servers including the free tier, with port forwarding and a SOCKS5 proxy included rather than upsold.

Recurring complaints

What people say is bad

The free plan has a hard data cap

Ten gigabytes a month, one device. Fine for occasional use, not enough to be your everyday connection — and the more useful features sit behind the paywall.

Streaming is a paid-tier feature

The free plan does not unblock streaming platforms. Even on paid, coverage is narrower than CyberGhost or NordVPN — Hulu and DAZN stayed blocked throughout our testing.

Small server network

Around 2,700 servers is modest next to NordVPN or CyberGhost, which means fewer options when a location is congested.

Lower brand recognition

Fewer independent reviews and a smaller Trustpilot sample than the major brands, so there is simply less accumulated evidence to draw on.

Speed test results

How fast hide.me VPN actually was

Measured against a 942 Mbps unprotected control line in Frankfurt, median of five runs per server, at the 21:00 CET peak window.

Our measurements

Nearby (<500 km)806 Mbps · 8 ms
Mid-range (1–3k km)711 Mbps · 51 ms
Long-haul (8k+ km)564 Mbps · 198 ms

hide.me held 806 Mbps nearby in our cycle, mid-table for the top ten but strong for a network this size. Long-haul performance fell to 564 Mbps, which is where the smaller footprint shows.

What independent testers found

Reviewers describe local-server WireGuard speeds as "blazing fast" and note premium servers matched free-tier performance, though results on distant servers were more variable.

Security and privacy

Malaysian jurisdiction with no data retention laws. Recently audited zero-logs policy, bare-metal servers rather than rented VMs, WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2 and SOCKS5 support, plus port forwarding and a kill switch that passed our full drop test.
