ExpressVPN review
The premium option, at a premium price — our July 2026 findings, plus what independent reviewers and real customers are reporting.

The premium option, at a premium price
ExpressVPN is the most polished product in this list. The apps are the best designed, the support desk is the most responsive, and Lightway — its in-house protocol — is genuinely quick, with a Lightway Turbo mode that one 2026 test measured as 15% above the unprotected baseline on US routes.
The criticism is singular and universal: price. Every review that recommends it also flags that it costs more than basically every competitor, and the promotional rate renews steeply. Whether that is worth paying depends on how much you value polish over specification.
What other reviewers and customers rate it
Our score is one data point. Here is how ExpressVPN is rated by independent review sites and on public customer-review platforms, so you can see where we agree and where we do not.
What people say is good
Lightway is fast and reconnects instantly
Substantially faster than OpenVPN in every comparison. Lightway Turbo pushed US download speeds 15% above baseline in May 2026 testing, and reconnection after a network change is close to instant — the most noticeable day-to-day advantage if you move between Wi-Fi and cellular.
TrustedServer RAM-only infrastructure
No server writes to disk; every reboot wipes state. ExpressVPN was early to this and it is now the benchmark other providers are measured against.
The best apps in the category
Reviewers consistently describe the clients as the most polished available across every platform, including router firmware that others do not attempt.
Support that actually answers
24/7 live chat with fast, knowledgeable responses is one of the most consistently praised elements across both expert reviews and user feedback.
What people say is bad
The price, universally
This is the single criticism every review makes. It is the most expensive major consumer VPN, and the two-year promotional rate renews at a considerably steeper annual price. Competitors deliver 90% of the product for a third of the money.
Fewer devices for more money
Eight simultaneous connections against unlimited from Surfshark, IPVanish and Private Internet Access — several of which cost significantly less.
Server count is mid-table
Around 3,000 servers is well behind NordVPN, CyberGhost and Private Internet Access, though coverage across 105 countries is broad and the network is well maintained.
Owned by Kape Technologies
Like CyberGhost, ExpressVPN sits under Kape. The same ownership questions apply, and serious reviews raise them.
How fast ExpressVPN actually was
Measured against a 942 Mbps unprotected control line in Frankfurt, median of five runs per server, at the 21:00 CET peak window.
Our measurements
ExpressVPN held 856 Mbps nearby in our cycle and 652 Mbps long-haul — a strong, flat curve with no obvious weak route. Lightway showed the fastest reconnection of any provider we tested, at a median of 0.3 seconds after a forced network change.
What independent testers found
Comparitech found Lightway substantially faster than OpenVPN across the board, and measured Lightway Turbo at 15% above the unprotected baseline on US download tests in May 2026.
Category scores
Overall = speed 30% · security 20% · privacy 20% · streaming 15% · value 15%. Support is published but unweighted.
Security and privacy
British Virgin Islands jurisdiction, outside the Fourteen Eyes. Independently audited, TrustedServer RAM-only infrastructure wiped on every reboot, AES-256 encryption by default, and a kill switch that held cleanly through our full drop test.
Streaming results
Six platforms, six servers each, three minutes of real playback per test.ExpressVPN cleared 6 of 6. A pass means full resolution with no proxy error on an ordinary server — not only ones the app labels "streaming optimised".
