NordVPN is the default recommendation on most review sites, and the reason is consistent across almost every independent test: it is fast. NordLynx, its WireGuard-based protocol, regularly tops speed comparisons, and the network is large enough that congestion rarely becomes the bottleneck.
It is also one of the most heavily audited services in the category, with four separate no-logs assessments published to date. The reservations reviewers raise are commercial rather than technical — renewal pricing and upsells — plus a handful of feature gaps that matter mostly to power users.

Fastest in most head-to-head tests
Independent testers put NordVPN at the top of the speed table repeatedly — around 82% retention in one 2026 comparison, with peak downloads of 903 Mbps on nearby servers. It is the provider others get benchmarked against.
Streaming just works
One 2026 review unblocked all 18 platforms it tested, with no buffering or dropped connections. Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, Hulu and DAZN are all reliably accessible.
Four published audits
The no-logs policy has been independently assessed four times. Whatever else is true, repeatedly inviting auditors in makes it expensive to be caught lying.

What people say is bad
Renewal pricing is the number one gripe
This dominates negative Trustpilot reviews. The introductory rate is excellent; the renewal is not, and users report being surprised by it. Set a calendar reminder before the term ends.
No port forwarding
A recurring complaint from the torrenting community. If you need port forwarding, IPVanish or Private Internet Access are the better fit.
Slow connects on distant servers
Several reviews note that connecting to far-away locations can take noticeably longer than rivals, even though throughput once connected is excellent.
Unreliable in restrictive countries
Access from heavily censored networks is reported as inconsistent. Obfuscation exists but is not the strongest in the category.
How fast NordVPN actually was
Measured against a 942 Mbps unprotected control line in Frankfurt, median of five runs per server, at the 21:00 CET peak window.
Our measurements
NordVPN posted the fastest nearby figure in our cycle at 902 Mbps — 96% of our control line — and stayed in the top two on every distance band. NordLynx is the reason: WireGuard performance with a NAT layer over the key-to-IP mapping that plain WireGuard leaves exposed.
What independent testers found
Cybernews recorded roughly 82% speed retention and peak nearby downloads of 903 Mbps in 2026 testing, ranking it the fastest of the services they evaluated — closely matching our own nearby result.
