Proton VPN comes out of the same Swiss company as Proton Mail, and it is the rare consumer VPN where the privacy marketing is backed by something checkable: every client app is open source, the no-logs policy has been independently audited, and the company publishes the full reports rather than a summary page.
What changed over the last two years is speed. Proton used to be the option you chose in spite of performance. With WireGuard and its VPN Accelerator layer, independent testers now regularly measure it within a few percent of the fastest providers on the market — one 2026 gigabit-fibre test recorded over 950 Mbps on a nearby WireGuard server.

What people say is good
The free tier is genuinely free
Reviewers consistently single this out as the best free VPN plan available: unlimited bandwidth, no ads, and no data cap. The catch is one device, around 10 server countries, and no streaming or P2P — but nothing is monetised behind your back.
Open source, and audited
Every app is open source and the no-logs policy has been through independent audit with full reports published. For readers who care about verification rather than promises, this is the differentiator most reviewers lead with.
Secure Core multi-hop
Traffic can be routed through a hardened server in Switzerland, Iceland or Sweden before it exits, which protects against a compromised exit node. Very few providers at this price offer the equivalent.
Speed is no longer a compromise
WireGuard plus VPN Accelerator puts Proton within a few percent of the fastest providers. Testers report roughly 88% speed retention, and it consistently unblocks 10+ Netflix regions plus Disney+, Prime Video and BBC iPlayer.

A very low Trustpilot score
Proton VPN sits at 2.2/5 on Trustpilot — far below every other provider in this list. It is worth reading in context: the sample is small (under 1,000 reviews versus 44,000 for NordVPN), and much of the negative volume relates to the wider Proton account ecosystem, billing and support responsiveness rather than the VPN itself. Expert reviewers rate it far higher. But it is a real gap between how critics and customers rate the same product.
Support is not 24/7
Live chat runs during European business hours only, and email replies are commonly reported at 24–48 hours. Providers charging similar money offer round-the-clock chat.
Not the cheapest long-term
The two-year plan lands around $4.50/month, against roughly $3 for NordVPN and $2.19 for CyberGhost and Surfshark on comparable terms.
DAZN stays blocked
Sports streaming is the consistent gap. Most other major platforms work; DAZN did not in our testing or in several independent reviews.

Measured against a 942 Mbps unprotected control line in Frankfurt, median of five runs per server, at the 21:00 CET peak window.
Our measurements
Proton was the strongest long-haul performer in our cycle, holding 712 Mbps on a Frankfurt-to-Sydney hop. That matches what independent testers report: strong retention, with VPN Accelerator making the biggest difference on high-latency routes where WireGuard alone tends to fall away.
What independent testers found
CyberInsider measured roughly 88% speed retention in 2026 testing. A separate gigabit-fibre test recorded over 950 Mbps on a nearby WireGuard server — close to line rate, with very little protocol overhead.
