These are the two providers that finished first and second in our July 2026 cycle, and they are close enough that the right answer genuinely depends on what you are doing. We gave them 62 and 58 lab hours respectively. Here is where each one won.
Speed: NordVPN wins the short hop, Proton wins the long one
On a nearby server NordVPN was the fastest provider we tested all cycle: 902 Mbps against our 942 Mbps control line, or 96% retention. Proton VPN managed 898 Mbps — a 4 Mbps gap that no human being will ever perceive.
The interesting result is the long-haul route. Pushed from Frankfurt to Sydney, Proton held 712 Mbps and NordVPN 698 Mbps. Proton's VPN Accelerator layer is doing real work on high-latency paths, which is exactly where plain WireGuard usually falls away.
Privacy: Proton is the one you can check
Both hold audited no-logs policies and both sit outside the Fourteen Eyes agreements — Proton in Switzerland, NordVPN in Panama. NordVPN has been through four separate audits, the longest trail of anyone in our top ten.
Proton's advantage is different in kind rather than degree: every client is open source, and we compiled the Linux app from source and got a hash matching the published binary. That means the audit can be checked against the code rather than taken on trust. If verification matters to you, that is the deciding factor.
Four audits is strong evidence. Reproducible builds are proof you can run yourself. They are not the same thing.
Streaming: NordVPN, clearly
NordVPN cleared all six platforms we test on the first connection attempt. Proton cleared five — Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video and Hulu all worked, but DAZN stayed blocked on every server we tried. If you follow sport, that single result settles it.
Price and what happens at renewal
NordVPN starts at $3.39/month on a 24-month term; Proton at $4.49 on the same commitment. Both renew considerably higher, and renewal pricing is the most common complaint in NordVPN's user reviews by a wide margin. Set a calendar reminder either way.
Proton also has something NordVPN does not: a free tier with no data cap, no ads and no speed limit. It will not stream and it is one device only, but it means you can test the network properly before paying anything.
The verdict
- Buy NordVPN if streaming is a priority, you want the fastest possible nearby connection, or you want 24/7 live chat support.
- Buy Proton VPN if you want open-source clients you can verify, better intercontinental performance, or a genuinely usable free tier to trial first.
- Skip both if you need port forwarding — neither offers it, and IPVanish or Private Internet Access will serve you better.
We rank Proton first overall by 0.2 points, and that margin is almost entirely down to verifiability and the free tier. On raw performance these two are a coin flip.
