Speed: NordVPN, by a clear margin
NordVPN measured 902 Mbps nearby against ExpressVPN's 856 Mbps. Long-haul, 698 Mbps against 652 Mbps. NordVPN was faster on every distance band we tested, by roughly 5–7% throughout.
ExpressVPN wins one specific speed metric decisively, though: reconnection. Lightway re-established a usable connection in a median of 0.3 seconds after a forced network change, the fastest of any provider we tested. If you move between Wi-Fi and cellular constantly, that is more noticeable day to day than peak throughput.
Streaming and security: effectively tied
Both cleared all six streaming platforms. Both passed every DNS, IPv6, WebRTC and kill-switch test across 40 forced disconnects. Both run RAM-only server infrastructure that wipes on reboot, and both hold independent audits.

The verdict
Buy NordVPN. It is faster, cheaper, has more servers, more devices and more audits. Buy ExpressVPN only if the apps and the support desk matter more to you than the specification — which is a legitimate preference, just an expensive one. If you want ExpressVPN's polish at a lower price, Surfshark is the closest substitute.
Who each one is actually for
ExpressVPN suits people who want a VPN to be invisible infrastructure — install it, forget it, and have it reconnect instantly every time the laptop wakes up. The Lightway reconnection figure of 0.3 seconds is the clearest expression of that design goal, and nothing else we test matches it.
NordVPN suits people who read specifications. More servers, more countries, more devices, more audits and more speed, for less money. If you are the sort of person comparing measurement tables, you have already made this decision.
The renewal question
Both providers renew well above their promotional rates, but ExpressVPN's jump is proportionally the smallest in our top ten — from $4.99 to $12.95. NordVPN goes from $3.39 to $12.99. By year two they cost nearly the same, which changes the calculation if you intend to stay long term without managing the renewal.
Compare year-two prices, not year-one. The gap between these two is $1.60 a month for the first term and four cents thereafter.
