This is the comparison we get asked about most, and the answer is less flattering to the expensive option than you might expect. Surfshark undercuts NordVPN by roughly a third on a comparable term and removes the device limit entirely. The performance penalty is real but small.
The speed gap is 3%
NordVPN measured 902 Mbps on a nearby server. Surfshark measured 874 Mbps on the same route at the same hour. That is a 3.1% difference against a 942 Mbps control line — in practice, invisible.
On the long-haul Frankfurt-to-Sydney hop the gap widens slightly: 698 Mbps for NordVPN, 668 Mbps for Surfshark. Still under 5%. Both are comfortably fast enough to saturate anything a household will realistically do.
Where Surfshark actually wins

Where NordVPN earns the premium
Streaming is the clearest difference. NordVPN cleared six platforms from six; Surfshark cleared five, failing on DAZN across all twelve servers we tried. NordVPN also has four published no-logs audits against Surfshark's one, and sits in Panama rather than the Netherlands — which is inside the Nine Eyes agreement.
One caveat worth knowing: some reviewers have flagged that Surfshark may record IP addresses, which sits awkwardly against a strict no-logs claim. The policy has been independently audited, but it is the most substantive privacy criticism raised against them and worth reading the current policy directly.
You are paying roughly $14 a year extra for DAZN access, three more audits and a better jurisdiction. Whether that is worth it is a genuine judgement call.

For most households, Surfshark. The speed difference is inside the margin most people would notice, and unlimited devices removes a real constraint. Choose NordVPN if you need DAZN, if jurisdiction outside intelligence alliances is a hard requirement, or if you want the deepest audit history available.

Which one for which household
If one person is buying for themselves and cares about sport, NordVPN. DAZN is the single platform Surfshark could not reach, and NordVPN reached it on the first attempt. The extra $14 a year is a reasonable price for that if you follow a sport that is locked behind it.
If you are buying for a house with more than ten devices in it, Surfshark, almost regardless of anything else. Once you exceed NordVPN's device cap you are either buying a second subscription or configuring a router, and both cost more than the difference between these two products.
What we would actually do
We run both in the lab and would personally buy Surfshark for a household and NordVPN for a single power user. The 3% speed difference genuinely does not matter; the device policy and the DAZN result genuinely do. Neither is a mistake, which is not something we can say about every pair of providers we compare.
