PrivateVPN review
Small, cheap, and genuinely good at one thing — our July 2026 findings, plus what independent reviewers and real customers are reporting.

Small, cheap, and genuinely good at one thing
PrivateVPN is a Swedish outfit running roughly 200 servers across 63 countries — a rounding error next to NordVPN's 9,000. Despite that, reviewers repeatedly find it unblocks Netflix libraries in every country they test, which is a remarkable result for a network this size.
It is also where the independent reviews diverge most sharply. Some rate it highly for streaming and value; at least one ranks it 22nd of 30 VPNs and does not recommend it. The disagreement is mostly about speed, and about one significant gap: PrivateVPN has never published an independent audit.
What other reviewers and customers rate it
Our score is one data point. Here is how PrivateVPN is rated by independent review sites and on public customer-review platforms, so you can see where we agree and where we do not.
What people say is good
Streaming punches far above its weight
The standout finding across reviews: PrivateVPN unblocked Netflix libraries in every country tested, from a network of roughly 200 servers. Per-server, that is the best unblocking ratio in this list.
Very cheap on a long term
The three-year plan is among the lowest per-month costs in the category, undercutting almost everything here.
Ten devices included
Generous for a provider at this price, and more than ExpressVPN offers for several times the money.
Well documented manual setup
Reviewers note the router and NAS configuration guides are unusually thorough for a company this small.
What people say is bad
No independent audit — at all
The most serious gap. PrivateVPN has never commissioned a third-party audit of its no-logs claim, so the policy rests entirely on the company's word. Every other provider in this top ten except none has published something; this is the one that has not.
No WireGuard in the apps
OpenVPN and IKEv2 only in the desktop clients. WireGuard can be configured manually on their servers, but it is not in the app — and that costs real speed against every rival here.
Speed reviews contradict each other
Some testers describe nearby servers as "lightning fast"; others measured over 60% speed loss across all servers and placed it in the bottom 10 of 50 VPNs tested. Our own result put it slowest in the top eight. Expect variability.
Thin coverage outside Europe and the US
Most of the 200 servers sit in the UK and USA, with very limited presence in Asia and Africa.
How fast PrivateVPN actually was
Measured against a 942 Mbps unprotected control line in Frankfurt, median of five runs per server, at the 21:00 CET peak window.
Our measurements
PrivateVPN was the slowest provider in our top ten at 731 Mbps nearby and 497 Mbps long-haul. The absence of WireGuard in the client is the most likely explanation — every faster provider here defaults to it.
What independent testers found
Reviews conflict sharply. WizCase found nearby servers fast and distant locations solid; TheBestVPN measured over 60% speed loss across all servers and ranked it in the bottom 10 of 50 services tested. Treat any single speed figure for this provider with caution.
Category scores
Overall = speed 30% · security 20% · privacy 20% · streaming 15% · value 15%. Support is published but unweighted.
Security and privacy
Swedish jurisdiction — inside the Fourteen Eyes. AES-256 encryption, a kill switch, and a stated no-logs policy that has never been independently verified. If audit evidence matters to you, this is the weak point.
Streaming results
Six platforms, six servers each, three minutes of real playback per test.PrivateVPN cleared 5 of 6. A pass means full resolution with no proxy error on an ordinary server — not only ones the app labels "streaming optimised".
